What to Do After You Meet Someone at a Networking Event
If you’re a woman over 40 growing a business and you attend a networking event, you may be wondering: What should I do after that first connection? Here’s exactly what I do:
I send a DM.
As a social media coach for women entrepreneurs, I’ve found that starting with a direct message builds real connection, conversation, and collaboration. That single step has led to clients, business partners, and genuine friendships. I recently shared this process while speaking at the Boise Breakfast Club, and what happened next stuck with me.
Yesterday I spoke at @BoiseBreakfastClub, a local networking meeting, and the amazing Kelci Douglas asked a question that kept me up until 2 AM and had me tapping out this post first thing this morning.
“What do you do after you connect with someone online?”
I had already shared the strategy: be searchable, show warmth and competence in your content, invite people into your world, and “go first” with a DM or comment.
But then what?
The DM is the star of the show but not for the reasons you may think. This message isn’t asking for anything, not even a response. It’s simply a point of connection to bring that person into your online world. From there, your content can take the lead.
Here’s a quick example:
✅ “It was great to meet you at Boise Breakfast Club yesterday.”
❌ “It was great to meet you at Boise Breakfast Club yesterday! I’d love to grab coffee and hear more about your business.”
The way that first message lands matters. When there’s no pressure to respond or schedule a meeting, there’s no awkward tension. No obligation. Just a kind acknowledgment.
When I answered Kelci’s question, I said, “That’s it.”
She replied, “No, you do more than that.”
That got me thinking… and she was right.
What do I do?
I’m interested. That’s my whole networking strategy.
I read your captions.
I watch your stories.
I comment, celebrate, and support.
When I’ve met someone in person, especially women I admire in business, I want to get to know them online too. That’s how I follow up. With curiosity. With consistency.
Could this really be the reason I’ve gained so many incredible clients, collaborators, and friendships over the years?
Not a funnel. Not a tactic.
That’s what I do after a networking event.
In a world obsessed with getting attention, there’s power in giving it.
So, if you’ve been wondering what to do next after meeting someone at a networking event, this is it. Start with curiosity. You never know where it might lead.
And one more thing…
God knows I’m never afraid to be a fan of the women I meet. Be a fangirl.
I’m 54 years old, and I fangirl women I admire all the time. It’s fun. Try it. 🤩
Zero harm will come to you from complimenting another woman in the online space. In fact, I think the space could use a lot more joy and generosity. Could it really be this simple?
